Tips for Building Self-Esteem and Confidence
Self-esteem and confidence are fundamental cornerstones for our happiness in life. They apply to all aspects of our lives including personal development, career, education, relationship, and health.
What is Self-Esteem and Self-Confidence?
What is self-esteem and self-confidence? Is it the elimination of insecurity, apprehension, and ambiguity? Is it being graceful and poise at all time, in all situations and circumstances? What does having self-esteem and self-confidence mean? To answer these questions, we first have to define these characteristics:
Self-esteem (noun): a realistic respect for or favorable impression of oneself; self-respect.
Self-confidence (noun): realistic confidence in one’s own judgment, ability, power, etc.
In the definitions above, the operative word is “realistic”.
Have you noticed what factors are glaringly missing in these definitions? Well first of all, absolutely no consideration was given to the judgments, opinions, feelings, or perceptions of others towards oneself. Secondly, these traits are self-focused, that is, they are independent of external circumstances.
For a case in point, simply look at the many media reports about famous movie stars and/or singers who have it all. Fame, fortune, and thousands of fans. If self-esteem and confidence are contingent on these external factors, why would these celebrities still feel inadequate and insecure? Whose lack of self-esteem led them to self-defeating behaviors such as substance abuse, alcoholism, or addictions.
Self-esteem is the love and respect for oneself despite our imperfections; it is the unconditional acceptance of oneself regardless of our weaknesses and flaws.
Self-confidence on the other hand is the sureness of our positive qualities; the acknowledgment of our displeasing attributes; the acceptance of our limitations as well as a realistic tolerance of ambiguity.
Self-esteem and self-confidence are inner states of mind that can be nurtured and cultivated. It is our belief that we were all born with self-esteem and confidence, that these qualities are innate. But through persistent cultural conditioning, environmental factors, peers influence, unfavorable upbringing, lack of proper role model, learned maladaptive behaviors and the likes, we gradually “lost” these inherent qualities.
You may wonder why “lost” is in quotes. It’s because we didn’t really lose these qualities but rather like a mirror obscured by dust is unable to reflect any light, these qualities laid dormant under heaps of adverse dust.
One of the most effective methods to polish your inner mirror so that your self-esteem and confidence can shine through once again is by re-educating your unconscious (subconscious) mind. And no other therapeutic technique is more suited than clinical hypnotherapy. In fact, clinical hypnotherapy may well be the only therapeutic approach capable of achieving it.
During the therapy sessions, we help you identify and discard your limiting beliefs, faulty mental programs, misconceptions, and fallacious assumptions. You will “re-program” your unconscious mind with positive, beneficial, and more favorable beliefs thus creating a more robust and resolute self-image.
Imagine a balance weight scale, on one side are the undesirable qualities while on the other holds the traits aspired, poise, calmness, and self-assurance. For every undesirable quality you eradicate; every favorable traits you instill, the scale tips in your favor until the transformation is completed.
